IT6030015 - SCI Macchia di Sant'Angelo Romano

General description:

This is one of 183 sites identified in the Lazio region in implementation of Directive 92/43/EEC 'Habitat' aimed at protecting habitats and endangered plant and animal species in EU territory. This Directive is therefore intended to protect, at Community level, particular natural environments, which will form the network of protected areas known as 'Natura 2000'.

The SCI 'Macchia di Sant'Angelo Romano' covers almost 800 hectares and includes the entire Poggio Cesi hill, the Giochetto forest hill (Castelchiodato stain), the Nardi wood (Cerqueta caves), the whole Arovello wood, and all areas between them. The European Union requires Member States to ensure the presence of natural elements in the SCI for which the same SCI have been identified, and for this purpose is necessary the preparation of an appropriate Management Plan.

Flora and vegetation

About half of the territory of the SCI is cultivated, mostly with olive trees and fodder. The most extensive forest formation is the coppice of Turkey Oak (Quercus cerris) with a thick bottom layer of the Eastern Hornbeam (Carpinus orientalis), accompanied by Hedge Maple (Acer campestre), Manna Ash (Fraxinus ornus), Wild Service Tree (Sorbus turminalis), storax tree (Styrax officinalis), hawthorn (Crataegus oxyacantha), cornelian cherry (Cornus mas), privet (Ligustrum vulgare), blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), Crab apple (Malus sylvestris), Seviceberry (Sorbus domestica) and Common Medlar (Mespilus germanica). The herbaceous layer is largely overrun by the butcher's broom (Ruscus aculeatus), while the protagonists of the spring flowers are Blue Anemone (Anemone apennina) and wavy cyclamen (Cyclamen repandum).

The reserve is still the ideal habitat for many animals. Among the mammals there are the fox, badger, porcupine, marten, weasels and martens. The forest includes Piciformes birds, cuckoos, jays, the hoopoe, and many species of songbirds. Birds of prey include the owl, the tawny owl, the scops owl, barn owl, the buzzard, the kestrel, the hobby.

Reptiles are represented by the tortoise, whose presence requires confirmation, by the gecko, the orbettino and common lacertidi. Amphibians: frog, common toad, newt and the common newt.
