LIFE+ MAN-GMP-ITA PROJECT

Validation of risk management tools for genetically modified plants in protected and sensitive areas in Italy

The LIFE+ Project MAN-GMP-ITA (NAT/IT/000334) aims to implement a methodology used in the risks analysis arising from the release of genetically modified plants on agricultural systems and adjacent areas, particularly sensitive and protected areas.

The analysis of functional biodiversity will allow the evaluation and monitoring of key ecological functions (pollination, natural control of pathogenic activity of the soil). We will also assess the possibility and consequences of gene flow of specific impacts of GM plants on adjacent habitats through the use of two experimental crops of corn and canola.

This will simulate two different scenarios of risk: first, assess the potential impact of corn expressing the Cry toxin on non-target Lepidoptera, while the second will investigate the potential for gene flow and its ecological consequences on Brassicacae.
At no stage of the project we will use genetically modified seeds or plants.

Thanks for the cooperation to the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea - Directorate of Nature Protection and Sea - Biosafety Section
